The story of chocolate

began more than one thousand years ago in South America where the Mayans and the Aztecs took beans from the “cocoa” tree and made a drink called “xocoatl”. An Aztec indian legend held that cocoa seeds had been brought from paradise by the Gods and that wisdom and power came from eating the fruit of the cocoa tree. “The food of the Gods” Christopher Colombus was the first one who brought back cocoa beans to Europe before it became a delicate beverage consumed in most of the royal courts in the richest countries of Europe. .

In the 19th century, the first chocolate bar was produced and this new food started to become popular. The emperor Napoleon Bonaparte gave chocolate to all of his soldiers.

The ingenuity of the chocolate masters improved the quality of the chocolate (by adding milk, spices, and other flavors) and a large variety of different chocolates appeared on the market.

“A Belgian Tradition”

In the 19th century, a French aristocratic the Count de Praslin created a mixture made of hazelnuts to fill his cakes and pastry. The Count gave his own name to this tasty filling. .

Later the Belgian chocolate masters started to use the praline filling. They improved the recipe and coated it with chocolate. It became very famous. The praline was born! The belgian chocolate masters have also developed many other kinds of fillings made of cream, butter and other kinds of nuts,..... All of these delicious small chocolates still keep this popular name : The Pralines

Belgian chocolate pralines are famous all over the world. This tradition remains very strong in Belgium and leads to a national contest among all the best chocolate masters. The winner of the contest gets the honour to have the King of Belgium as his first client.

Quality of chocolate

We can find a large variety of chocolate brands in supermarkets, so how can we choose which one to buy? It is always better to buy good quality chocolate! The quality of the chocolate depends mostly on the percentage of cocoa and cocoa butter which is use for the fabrication. Cheap chocolates have a low level of cocoa and vegetable fat is used instead of cocoa butter. The taste is poor and the chocolate usually sticks on the teeth and on the tongue. .

A good quality chocolate will melt in your mouth and will give you great pleasure. The Monggo products are made from this very good quality chocolate.

If you like a sweet taste you may prefer to buy milk chocolate or white chocolate, but if you prefer a strong cocoa flavour, you might choose a dark chocolate with minimum 50% of cocoa and savour it with a cup of good coffee.
